The Joy of Hosting: A World Cup to Remember
As the 2026 FIFA World Cup gets underway, with Canada, the United States, and Mexico jointly hosting the tournament, it's hard not to feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. The thrill of watching talented athletes from around the world come together to compete in the beautiful game is always infectious. And yet, amidst all the joy and energy, there are those who insist on raining on our parade.
Take, for example, USA Today columnist Nancy Armour, who penned an op-ed piece that's more about venting frustration than celebrating the World Cup itself. According to her, no matter how well the U.S. Men's National Team does in the tournament, we've revealed ourselves to be a "hateful and greedy nation." Oh dear, what a wonderful way to kick off this global celebration of sportsmanship!
Now, I'm not here to defend every single decision made by our government or leadership. But when it comes to hosting an international event like the World Cup, it's important to separate fact from fiction, and Armour's piece is riddled with errors and emotional outbursts.
For instance, she takes issue with President Trump's comments on welcoming Iran to compete in the tournament, amidst ongoing Middle East tensions. While some might find his words tone-deaf or insensitive, it's crucial to understand that this is an international sporting event, not a political summit. The World Cup is about showcasing our country's hospitality and welcoming spirit – something we do exceptionally well.
Armour also criticizes ticket prices for the tournament, decrying the "absurd" costs of attending matches. I agree with her on this point; those prices are indeed steep! However, it's important to remember that FIFA sets these prices, not our government. We can't blame the hosts for something outside their control.
Perhaps what bothers me most about Armour's piece is its complete lack of balance and perspective. She quotes New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who as an open-borders advocate, naturally has a bone to pick with the Trump administration. But where are the voices from other corners? Where's the acknowledgment that our country has done some incredible things in terms of hosting international events?
As we dive into this World Cup, let's remember that it's about more than just politics or controversy. It's about unity, friendship, and the joy of watching talented athletes compete at the highest level. So let's focus on the positive, shall we? Let's celebrate our country's role in hosting this magnificent event, and look forward to some truly thrilling matches ahead!
And who knows – maybe Nancy Armour will learn to appreciate the beauty of international sportsmanship, even if it means having to swallow her pride (and her disappointment at not seeing the U.S. Men's National Team make a deep run). Stranger things have happened, right?
As the World Cup unfolds, I'll be keeping a watchful eye on its many twists and turns. Stay tuned for more updates from this side of the field!
