The City of Oroville Takes a Step into the Future with Innovative Technology
In a bold move to enhance community safety and streamline police operations, the Oroville Police Department has rolled out cutting-edge mobile data terminals (MDTs) for its officers. This technological leap not only enables officers to access critical information on-the-go but also allows them to become a persistent presence in public spaces.
At Hewitt Park, where the department showcased the new technology, Action News Now spoke with Keliecia Riley, the department's public information officer, about the significance of this development. According to Riley, the decision to implement MDTs was influenced by recent cases of vandalism at Hewitt Park, which highlighted the need for a more efficient and effective response.
"For years, our officers have had to spend precious time driving back to the station to access critical information, gather data, and complete administrative tasks," Riley explained. "This has meant they couldn't be as present in the community as we would like them to be. With MDTs, that's all changing."
With these devices installed in their vehicles, officers can now simultaneously monitor crime hotspots, patrol public spaces like Hewitt Park, and tackle administrative tasks – a trifecta of efficiency that promises to revolutionize police operations.
As part of this new initiative, the Oroville Police Department will also begin issuing citations for park violations. These infractions include vandalism, camping, breaking park curfew, rowdy or disruptive behavior, and littering. The fine structure is as follows: $100 for the first offense, $200 for the second, $500 for the third, and a whopping $1,000 for the fourth.
In addition to these MDTs, the department will implement real-time security cameras at Hewitt Park and other public spaces. This technology will enable police officers to monitor areas of concern in real-time, further enhancing community safety.
While some may view this development as merely a technological upgrade, it's clear that the Oroville Police Department is committed to leveraging innovation to serve its citizens better. As the department continues to adapt to the changing needs of the community, one thing is certain – the city of Oroville will be safer and more connected than ever before.
