Kickin' it old school: Retail scores with World Cup flair

The thrill of the pitch is palpable as the world descends upon North America for the FIFA World Cup 2026! With a whopping 30.5 billion dollars expected to be contributed to the US gross economic output alone, it's no wonder that retailers are getting in on the action.

Macy's, known for its iconic Herald Square flagship store in New York, has transformed into the "World Soccer HQ" – an immersive experience that lets fans get up close and personal with their favorite teams. The space boasts a curated collection of sportswear, interactive features like an impressive tunnel, and even events featuring athletes like Riley Tiernan.

But Macy's isn't just about the flashy displays – it's also committed to giving back to the community. In partnership with the US Soccer Foundation, the retailer has been hosting youth from the Just Ball League for sessions with soccer players, spreading the love of the game to those who might not have access otherwise. It's a win-win for everyone involved!

Meanwhile, The Original Farmers Market in LA is gearing up to host its own Fan Zone between June 18 and June 21. For four days straight, fans can gather 'round for live match viewings, beer gardens, and soccer-themed experiences that'll make you feel like you're right there on the pitch.

Dick's Sporting Goods has partnered with Adidas on an epic campaign called "Where It All Kicks Off." The video follows characters through various settings – from a Dick's Sporting Goods store to a video game setting to a football match – all while highlighting the brand's top ambassadors, including Lionel Messi and Cobi Jones. And if that wasn't enough, Dick's is also teaming up with DonorsChoose to fund up to 250,000 dollars in US youth soccer projects.

Target's Summer Goals Tour has been making its way across the country, stopping in four cities – Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta, and Clifton – for a branded experience that lets fans get their game on. The event features a mini pitch, partner booths, and even a player's tunnel, all while offering interactive challenges and complimentary snacks.

Real estate investment firm Simon is bringing fan experiences and programming to several of its shopping centers throughout June in partnership with Adidas. Events will be held at Del Amo Fashion Center, Houston Premium Outlets, Sawgrass Mills, and Phipps Plaza, each featuring fan zones, Adidas product experiences, and performances that'll get you pumped up for the match.

And let's not forget about Walmart – the retail giant has over 200 soccer-related events planned across its Legendary Kickoffs program, hosted in collaboration with LALIGA. The retailer is also working with Soccer Forward and Boys & Girls Clubs of America to support 20 soccer activations across the country.

Nordstrom's partnership with Adidas takes shape across 35 stores located in match cities, offering a curated selection of Adidas products – from FIFA-branded jerseys to special edition merchandise. And if you're lucky enough to be in one of those cities, you might just catch one of their weekly activations featuring giveaways and sweepstakes.

Last but certainly not least, Pacific Retail Capital Partners (PRCP) is hosting activation hubs in more than 10 cities across the US, designed to drive engagement and sales throughout its portfolio. From watch parties and penalty kick simulations to exclusive merchandise and gift card giveaways, these hubs are a must-visit for any soccer fan.

As the world descends upon North America for this once-in-a-generation event, it's clear that retailers are pulling out all the stops to make this World Cup one to remember. Whether you're a die-hard fan or just looking for something new and exciting, there's no shortage of ways to get in on the action. So grab your favorite team's jersey, gather some friends, and let the games begin!
